TIGER WHEEL & TYRE PORSCHE DAY - SUNDAY 1st JUNE 2003
This event started more than 20 years ago with Peco at Loftus Versveld, home of the Blue Bulls Rugby Team of the then Northern Transvaal and quickly became affectionately known as Loftus Day. As far back as 2001 the Loftus management demanded a venue hire which escalated annually and eventually forced the Committee to seek a new venue. We approached the management of the Centurion Cricket field but they demanded an even higher venue hire fee of more than R100 per car. So began the search for another venue and we eventually found one in The Glen High School.
But back to the first Sunday in June 2003 - it was the start of the most wonderful winter morning one could ever ask for to host our Northern Region annual Porsche Day in Pretoria.
This year we were privileged to have the biggest tyre dealer in Gauteng, Tiger Wheel & Tyre, as our main sponsor. A big thank you is extended to Christo Joubert, manager of their Menlyn Branch for the superb boerewors-rolls and cold drinks served by his very willing Tiger-staff. Well done to the guys of Menlyn Branch! Your approach to the Porsche Display Day was really fantastic!
The Glen High School turned out to be a great venue and is certainly more accessible from the N1 freeway and more convenient for all the Gauteng members to attend. The headmaster of The Glen High School, Mr. Aubrey Brink went the extra mile to attend to all our requests without any hesitation – what a great friend – and we are certainly looking forward to the use of their school sports grounds again next year!!
If you were one of the early arrivals on Sunday morning you would have been amazed at the first batch of Porsche cars that pitched – all were red cars and of a different model! Who stated that a Porsche must be red otherwise it is not a sports car?
With a total of 45 Porsche cars on display, somewhat less than the previous years at Loftus, we still enjoyed a full array of these lovely sports cars. All the judges and participants in the different classes really had some difficult decisions to make, except for the judge of the Porsche 356 class…..
Partly due to the non participation of Peter Dorfer as the leader of the 356 pack, only one 356 arrived at The Glen High School. Apparently the whole 356 troop got lost in the suburbs of Pretoria and traveled past the school ground at least three times. Better luck next time!
The 924/944/968/928 class has really started to blossom with 15 entrants for the day! Most of the cars were Porsche 928s which have suddenly appeared from nowhere.
In the Porsche 911 – Pre-1974 class only four cars pitched - so what happened to all the other Pre-1974 register?
The most interesting fact was the reasoning of the lady judges in selecting their favourite. Amongst the comments for their selection were the words, nice, striking, impressive and wow! But the best choice was "love the owner!" In the ladies choice class the guards red Porsche 911 Speedster of Keith Gilmour with the hood down captured the attention of all the ladies! No wonder he received so many offers to sell the Speedster on the day!
Theo and Stelanie Rautenbach brought along a trailer full of regalia and sold a considerable amount of Porsche Club regalia. All the Porsche Club caps were sold out within the first hour of display!
Congratulations to all those who attended this day and to those who walked away with the perfectly wood crafted trophies sponsored by Tiger Wheel & Tyre. The excellent selection of trophies was done by Joe du Plooy and Christo Joubert, despite busy days at the office. (See the results and photos with this report).
Thanks to Ethniks Systems for the printing of the programme and publishing the colourful event program and map on the web-site. This assisted many a member in finding the hidden entrance to the soccerfie ld of The Glen High School. Even Les Barnes as the leader of the Johannesburg group sped by with Norah Barnes, proclaiming the school gate cannot be situated on a main arterial route!
This day would have not been possible at all if the members of the Porsche Club of South Africa did not bring their Porsche cars to show. Thanks to all the participating and active members!!! A hearty welcome is also extended to all the new Porsche owners who joined the Porsche Club on the day.
